Frequently asked questions

How are the rankings built?

Every list ranks one row per model, using the best configuration for that list. Ties share a rank. The criteria for each list are printed on its page. See the methodology.

Why are some model years or lists missing?

A list gets a page for a model year only when at least 10 different models qualify, so small classes such as small pickups or minivans have no page of their own. The newest model year is partial until EPA has rated all models.

Why are electric cars ranked separately?

EPA rates electric cars in MPGe and kWh per 100 miles, which cannot be compared with gasoline MPG. The EV rankings and the EV hub use those units only.
