Compare cars side by side

Add up to four cars to compare how efficient they are and what they cost to fuel at your state's prices and your mileage.

Each car starts with its newest full model year and its most efficient version. Change either in the table.

Gasoline uses the state's EIA series where one exists, otherwise its region's. Electricity is the state's residential average.

EPA's standard is 15,000 miles a year.

Replaces the looked-up price for the fuel the car uses (regular, premium or diesel).

Home charging price in dollars per kWh.

How this comparison works

Each column is one version of one model year. The cost rows use the same formulas and data as the car pages and the calculators, at the state, mileage and prices you set above the table.

Reading the table

The cheapest car to fuel is marked, and every difference is calculated from the rounded yearly costs so the numbers add up. Electric cars show MPGe and kWh per 100 miles instead of MPG, and plug-in hybrids show their gasoline rating plus electric figures.

Assumptions

  • 15,000 miles a year unless you change it, with EPA's mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving inside the combined rating.
  • Gasoline and diesel use EIA monthly retail prices for the state (or its region); electricity is the state's residential average. You can type your own prices.
  • Yearly costs are rounded to the nearest $10. Taxes, maintenance and insurance are not included.

Where the numbers come from and how fresh they are:

Vehicles: EPA/DOE fueleconomy.gov file of Sep 29, 2026 · Prices: EIA monthly retail gasoline (Sep 2026) and residential electricity (Jul 2026), U.S. average or the state or region you pick · 15,000 miles a year unless you change it · EPA combined rating (55% city, 45% highway)

Frequently asked questions

How many cars can I compare?

Up to four at a time. Add cars from the box above the table or with the Compare button on any car page.

Can I compare different model years?

Yes. Each column has its own model year and version selector, so you can compare a 2020 model with a 2026 one.

Why do some rows show a dash?

A dash means EPA does not report that figure for the car (for example range for a gas car) or that no honest cost can be shown, as for hydrogen and natural gas vehicles.
