Hybrid savings calculator

The 2026 Honda CR-V saves about $530 a year in fuel against its gas version at 15,000 mi a year and U.S. average prices. Enter what the hybrid costs extra and we work out how many years of fuel savings it takes to pay it back.

Only models with both a gas and a hybrid version in the same model year are listed.

How much more the hybrid costs than the gas version you picked, in dollars. Take it from a dealer or maker price list: this site holds no vehicle prices.

Gasoline uses the state's EIA series where one exists, otherwise its region's. Electricity is the state's residential average.

EPA's standard is 15,000 miles a year.

Assumptions used

  • 15,000 mi a year (≈ 24,140 km), the same for both versions.
  • Regular gasoline: $4.36/gal (U.S. average, EIA, Sep 2026).
  • The price difference is the number you entered. This site holds no vehicle prices and never fills one in.
  • Fuel costs only: maintenance, battery or tax-credit differences, financing and resale value are not included.
  • Yearly costs are rounded to the nearest $10 and the saving is calculated from the rounded values, so payback uses the same numbers you see.

What this calculator shows

It compares the hybrid and gas versions of one model in one model year: what each costs to fuel, how much the hybrid saves per year, and how long those savings take to cover the extra price of the hybrid.

Because this site holds no vehicle prices, you enter the price difference yourself. The tool never guesses it.

How payback is calculated

Each version's yearly fuel cost is miles per year ÷ combined MPG × the price per gallon, rounded to the nearest $10. The yearly saving is the gas version's rounded cost minus the hybrid's.

Payback in years = the price difference you entered ÷ the yearly saving. Net after N years = the yearly saving × N − the price difference. Both use the rounded saving, so they match the numbers on the page.

Assumptions

  • Both versions drive the same miles a year, 15,000 unless you change it, at the same fuel price.
  • Fuel costs only. Maintenance, battery care, incentives, financing and resale value can all change whether a hybrid pays off.
  • The comparison uses the versions you pick. Trim, engine and drive differences between the two can add to or reduce the gap beyond the hybrid system itself.
  • Gasoline uses EIA monthly retail prices: the state's own series where one exists, otherwise its region's. Alaska and Hawaii need a typed gas price.
  • Fuel prices stay flat for every year compared. If prices rise, the real saving is larger; if they fall, it is smaller.

Vehicles: EPA/DOE fueleconomy.gov file of Sep 29, 2026 · Prices: EIA monthly retail gasoline (Sep 2026) and residential electricity (Jul 2026), U.S. average or the state or region you pick · 15,000 miles a year unless you change it · EPA combined rating (55% city, 45% highway)

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hybrid take to pay for itself?

It is the extra price of the hybrid divided by the fuel it saves each year. Drive more miles or pay more for gas and the payback gets shorter; a larger price difference makes it longer. Enter your own price difference above to see yours.

Where do I find the hybrid price difference?

Compare the two trims you are considering on a dealer or manufacturer price sheet, and subtract the gas price from the hybrid price. This site holds no vehicle prices, so it asks you for the number.

Why does the saving look smaller than the MPG gap suggests?

Fuel use is gallons per mile, not miles per gallon. Going from 20 to 30 MPG saves more fuel than going from 40 to 50 MPG, so the gain from a hybrid is biggest on thirsty cars. See how annual fuel cost is calculated.

Is a plug-in hybrid included?

No. This tool compares gas and conventional hybrid versions. For plug-in hybrids, use the fuel cost calculator or the EV vs gas calculator.

Which gas version is compared with the hybrid?

By default the most efficient gas version with the same drive. You can choose any gas and hybrid version of that model year; engines and trims that differ besides the hybrid system will change the result.
