Car fuel cost and MPG calculators
Free calculators built on official EPA ratings and dated EIA fuel prices. For example, a 2026 Honda Civic costs about $1,810 a year to fuel at U.S. average prices, and 30.0 MPG = 7.8 L/100 km. Pick a tool and use your own car, state and mileage.

| MPG converter | One value in any fuel economy unit | The same value in the other four units |
| Hybrid savings calculator | A model, the hybrid price difference, miles | Yearly fuel saving and payback time |
| Compare cars | Up to four cars, state, miles | Side-by-side efficiency, range and fuel cost |
One engine behind every tool
Every calculator uses the same cost formulas and the same EPA and EIA data as the car pages and state pages, so a number on a tool matches the number you see elsewhere on the site for the same car, state and mileage.
Costs are rounded to the nearest $10, and every difference is calculated from the rounded values so the numbers always add up. Prices carry the month they apply to, and nothing is estimated where official data is missing.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the numbers come from?
Vehicle efficiency comes from the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy fueleconomy.gov database for model years 2000 and newer. Gasoline, diesel and residential electricity prices come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), by state or region. See the methodology.
Are the results exact?
They are estimates from official ratings and monthly average prices. Real fuel use depends on how, where and in what weather you drive, and the price at your pump can differ from the state average.
Can I use my own prices?
Yes. Every calculator that uses fuel or electricity prices lets you type your own price per gallon or per kWh, which replaces the state average.
Do the tools cover electric and plug-in hybrid cars?
Yes. Electric cars are costed from kWh per 100 miles and plug-in hybrids from EPA's utility factor. Hydrogen and natural gas vehicles are not costed because there is no reliable official price series.
