How this club is built

Every line below is read from the club definition that produced the tables.

  • Classes: every EPA class except special-purpose vehicles.
  • Powertrains: Gas, Hybrid, Diesel.
  • Membership: a model joins when one of its configurations has an EPA combined rating of 40 MPG or higher.
  • One row per model (make and model) per model year: the configuration with the highest combined MPG is shown, with its trim, engine and drive named in the row. Ties share a rank, then the lower fuel cost comes first.
  • Special-purpose vehicles, such as heavy-duty variants, are excluded.
  • Electric vehicles are ranked separately (see the EV rankings): gas, hybrid and diesel MPG is never mixed with MPGe.
  • Annual cost assumes 15,000 miles a year at the EPA rating and the dated national fuel prices stamped below; it is rounded to $10 and all differences use the rounded values.
  • Counts start at MY2000 and run to MY2027 (MY2027 is partial: EPA is still rating it).
  • A club page is published only when at least 10 models qualify in the latest complete model year.

Frequently asked questions

How many gas, hybrid and diesel models get 40 MPG or more?

17 in MY2026, using the EPA combined rating. The list above names every one.

Which model has the best MPG in this club?

The Toyota Prius (2.0 L · FWD) at 57 MPG in MY2026, costing about $1,150 a year to fuel at 15,000 miles a year. The median member is rated 46 MPG.

How has the number of gas, hybrid and diesel models at 40+ MPG changed since 2000?

From 1 in MY2000 to 17 in MY2026, counted with the same rule every year. The table above lists every model year.

Which MPG figure is used?

EPA's combined rating, which blends 55% city and 45% highway driving. It comes from standardized laboratory tests, so your results will differ with driving style, weather and load. See the methodology.

Are plug-in hybrids and electric cars included?

No. Plug-in hybrids report gasoline-only MPG on the label and EVs report MPGe, so mixing them in would overstate or misstate efficiency. Electric cars have their own rankings and the EV hub.
